Spanos Stadium Renovation Almost Complete
October 14, 2006
"We designed the sports field lighting to a national TV level for Division 1 sports. We significantly reduced light levels off site into the neighborhoods while making the lights on the field five times brighter. We designed the lighting for the stadium seating area, press boxes and press area, the luxury suites, the catering areas, telecommunications for press and boxes, two elevator and stair towers and the roadway lighting over California Blvd. We also handled emergency power for exit and egress lighting to the lower level and out of the stadium." - Bill Thoma
The first step in transforming the aging Mustangs Stadium into the gleaming Alex G. Spanos Stadium is almost complete.
Maino Construction of San Luis Obispo and dozens of subcontractors have been working steadily on the stadium renovation since Summer 2005.
When the first phase is complete, there will be 1, 500 additional seats, and the stadium will hold a total of 10,000 fans.
The Alex G. Spanos Stadium is a concrete and steel-frame facility. The single-tier configuration has bench seating, beginning four feet above the playing field and rising to skyboxes at 37 feet. In addition, the center section has chair-back seats.
Towers at each end (to house elevators), traditional Spanish-tile roofing and a stucco finish were designed to lend an early-California Mission flavor.
The lower concourse will house new restrooms, while the upper concourse will feature eight skybox-suites, an expanded press-room, and radio and television booths. New field lighting will improve playing conditions for night games.
The base construction cost is $14.5 million. The projected total cost of the project is approximately $21.5 million.
